Importing a Zoe from the UK

The Renault Zoe is sold in the UK in two ways – you can either buy the car and lease the battery (by far the most common way) or buy the car and the battery outright.

If you are importing a Zoe into New Zealand, you cannot buy one with a battery lease – you need to buy a Zoe for which the battery is bought outright. Such cars are identified by an ‘i’ appended after its name, ie ‘Zoe i’. You can see this written on the car, on marketing material, and hopefully in second hard car adverts.

To start searching for a Zoe i, look on the UK Autotrader website http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search.

Note: often a dealer incorrectly lists a leased-battery Zoe as a Zoe i. One way to check that it really is a Zoe i is to enter the license plate into the following website: https://www.mycarcheck.com.

To help understand the various models that you are likely to come across, here are the model names of the UK Zoes and their new prices. Note that the models names in other markets, such as in Europe and New Zealand, are different again. All the prices are net of the UK Plug in Car Grant (PiCG) of £4,500.

Budget

Here was my budget for importing an ex-demo, 18 month old Dynamique Intens (Q210), with 6,000 km on the odometer.

The final cost to me was around NZ$27,000. This is considerably less than it would have been if a NZ-based car dealer had imported it themselves, listed it at their dealership, and subsequently sold it to you. This is because if you are importing a car yourself, with or without using a car importing service, you are taking all the risk. If you are prepared to shoulder that risk, eg faults with the car when it arrives, then you can save yourself quite a sizeable amount of money.

In case you are wondering what the ‘Import Service Fee’ covers, it included:

  1. Helping with finding the car in the UK, including finding one that was “VAT Qualifying”.
  2. As my car was “VAT Qualifying”, arranged for the car to be purchased less VAT.
  3. Arranged delivery to a secure loading facility, while the car waited for the next available vehicle container ship bound for Lyttelton.
  4. Arranged shipping, maritime insurance, and ship tracking information.
  5. Once in NZ, arranging the invoice for customs GST and MAF cleaning.
  6. Arranging collection of vehicle and transportation to a compliance centre.
  7. Collection from compliance centre.
  8. Change of plugs from UK to NZ on the EVSE.
  9. Registration and delivery.
